How do I get around the NSW South Coast without a car?

GR8 Transfers drives between Sydney Airport and South Coast towns from Helensburgh to Batemans Bay at fixed fares, with Kiama $420 from T1. The South Coast drew 10.5 million visitors in the year to June 2026, and most of them drive themselves. A driver helps when the car is the problem. Think of a wine lunch, a wedding, a family of five, a flight or a one-way walk.

Getting around the South Coast.

Mostly by car

Destination Wollongong says the visitor economy relies mainly on self-drive (Region Illawarra, 8 May 2026).

No Illawarra flights

Illawarra Regional Airport has had no passenger flights since 20 May 2026, when its airline suspended all Wollongong services with no return date. Sydney Airport and Western Sydney International, open since 25 October 2026, are the gateways.

Trains

From 15 November 2026, South Coast Line trains run into Central and no longer stop at Wolli Creek. Rail trips to the airport then need extra changes, and trains go no further south than Bomaderry.

Gaps on the ground

Bundanon, near Nowra, states that no complete public transport routes serve it. The Shoalhaven's 2018 destination plan named limited tours, buses, taxis and rideshare as a gap for visitors.

Peak weeks

Demand peaks at Christmas, in school holidays and on long weekends. The Ulladulla Times reported regional occupancy of about 80% from Christmas to New Year's Eve (30 December 2025).
