Wollongong is a city of distinct pockets, and the fare follows the pocket. The northern suburbs (Corrimal, Bellambi, Towradgi, Fairy Meadow) are closest to the motorway and the cheapest run. The CBD, North Wollongong, Gwynneville and Keiraville cover the hotels, Wollongong Hospital and the University of Wollongong. Figtree, Mount Keira and Unanderra sit up against the escarpment, and the southern suburbs from Port Kembla and Warrawong to Windang and Dapto add 10 to 15 km to the drive.

Sydney Airport or Western Sydney International?
From Wollongong, Western Sydney International is almost exactly as far as Sydney Airport (about 78 km against 79 km to T1). The WSI road climbs the escarpment and runs inland via Appin Road, so it takes 10 to 15 minutes longer but costs slightly less. Choose the airport your flight leaves from: the fare is fixed either way.

Until 14 November 2026, Wollongong trains stop at Wolli Creek, one change from the terminals. From 15 November 2026 they run into Central instead and skip Wolli Creek, so the airport trip means two changes (Sutherland or Hurstville, then Wolli Creek) or one change via Central, which takes longer (ABC News, NSW Government).

The train times are the morning-peak figures reported by the Illawarra Mercury once the new timetable starts. Before the change the trip took about 82 to 85 minutes. If you are a newly enrolled international student arriving in Australia for the first time, check whether you qualify for the University of Wollongong's own free airport pickup. UOW asks for the request at least 72 hours before you land, and the vehicle may be shared (UOW airport pickup).
