From Katoomba, GR8 Transfers charges a fixed $420 to Sydney Airport — the same to T1 International or the T2/T3 domestic terminals — and $270 to Western Sydney International (WSI), in the Executive Sedan. Western Sydney International is the cheaper airport from Katoomba, by $150.

What the Katoomba run actually involves.

The drive covers roughly 119 km via the Great Western Highway, taking about 1 hour 45 minutes in normal conditions. Katoomba is the busiest Blue Mountains town and the only one on this corridor where the train is genuinely competitive with driving. What the train cannot do is collect four people and their luggage from a Leura guesthouse at 3am for a 6am flight.

Katoomba sits on the electrified Blue Mountains Line, so the train is a genuine option: Central to Katoomba is a direct intercity run with no change of train.

Local pickups cover Echo Point, Scenic World, the Three Sisters and the Blue Mountains guesthouse belt around Leura and Medlow Bath. Whatever the pickup point, the fare is the one quoted before you book.

Road conditions on the Great Western Highway corridor change with roadworks and weather. Transport for NSW publishes current conditions for the Victoria Pass section at transport.nsw.gov.au/gwhvictoriapass. Your chauffeur checks conditions on the morning of travel and adjusts the departure time, at no change to the fare.

From Katoomba, the train is often the better option

Katoomba sits on the Blue Mountains Line with direct electric services to Central, and unlike the Central West towns further west, those services are frequent rather than twice daily. For a lot of flights, rail genuinely works.

So when would you book a car?

Three situations, and if none of them apply, take the train.

• Flights before about 8am — the early services and the change at Central stop lining up, and the margin disappears.
• Groups and families — the fixed fare covers the car, so four people change the arithmetic completely against four rail fares plus the airport station access fee.
• Heavy or awkward luggage — Katoomba station, a change at Central and an airport platform is three sets of stairs and gaps with a large case.
